DPF cleaning and diagnostics
across South Wales —
we fix the cause, not just the light.

A blocked diesel particulate filter is a symptom, not a fault in itself. We read the live soot and ash loads, check the sensors, injectors, EGR and turbo behaviour behind it, then clean, regenerate or advise replacement based on what the data actually says.

What this service is

Specialist dpf cleaning & diagnostics — done properly.

What it is

DPF diagnostics is the process of establishing exactly why a diesel particulate filter has stopped self-cleaning — then dealing with that cause. That can mean an on-vehicle chemical clean, a forced static regeneration, correcting the fault preventing passive regeneration, or an honest recommendation to have the filter removed for off-vehicle cleaning or replaced.

Who it's for

Drivers with a DPF warning light, limp mode, repeated regeneration cycles, rising oil level, or a van that has spent its life on short urban runs. Very common on Transit, Vivaro, Transporter, Crafter, Sprinter, Qashqai, Focus, Astra, 3-Series and 320d-type commuters across the valleys.

When you need it

As soon as the light appears. A DPF at 60% soot load can usually be regenerated on the driveway. At 100%+ with ash accumulation, the options narrow and the cost rises sharply.

Why professional matters

Because most 'DPF failures' are not failures at all. They are blocked EGR valves, a leaking injector, a failed differential pressure sensor, a stuck turbo vane actuator or a driving pattern that never lets the filter get hot enough. Replace the filter without fixing that and the new one blocks again within months.

What it costs to ignore it

The cheap way is the expensive way.

DPF work is where drivers get taken advantage of more than anywhere else in the trade. A £1,200 filter gets sold when a £0 forced regen and a sensor test would have done.

Real risks

  • Limp mode on the A470 with no warning, at the worst possible moment.
  • Engine oil dilution from repeated failed regeneration attempts — a genuine engine-killer.
  • Turbo and EGR damage caused by excessive back pressure being ignored.
  • An MOT failure and a vehicle you cannot legally use for work.
  • Paying for a new DPF when the underlying cause is still there.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a bottle of 'DPF cleaner' and hoping it clears a 100% blocked filter.
  • Clearing the light without ever reading the soot and ash values.
  • Having the filter gutted illegally, then failing the MOT emissions and visual check.
  • Ignoring the early warning light for weeks until a static regen is no longer possible.

Our process

The steps that make the difference.

Every dpf cleaning & diagnostics job follows the same disciplined sequence — so the result is predictable, repeatable and guaranteed.

  1. 1

    Full diagnostic read

Stored and pending codes, freeze-frame data, and the full DPF data block: soot load, ash load, distance since last regen, regen attempts and exhaust temperatures.

  2. 2

    Cause investigation

Differential pressure sensor tested, EGR position and flow checked, injector correction values reviewed, turbo actuator behaviour verified. This is where the real answer usually lives.

  3. 3

    Clean or forced regeneration

Where soot load and safety parameters allow, we run an on-vehicle clean and a manufacturer-standard forced static regeneration with live temperature monitoring.

  4. 4

    Fix the underlying fault

Sensor replacement, EGR work, injector correction or calibration adjustment — whatever the data pointed to. Without this step the problem returns.

  5. 5

    Verify and advise

Post-regen values recorded, road test completed, and you get a plain-English report plus a driving pattern that will keep the filter healthy.

What you actually get

The outcomes that matter.

You find out the truth

Live data tells us whether you have a cleanable filter or a genuinely spent one. No scare tactics, no upselling.

Money saved on filters

Most vehicles we see do not need a new DPF. A regen plus a sensor or EGR fix resolves the majority.

Limp mode gone

Back pressure restored to normal, power restored, and the light out for the right reason.

Protected engine oil

Stopping failed regen cycles ends the fuel-in-oil dilution that quietly destroys bearings and turbos.

Better MPG afterwards

A free-flowing exhaust and a correctly operating EGR routinely return 3–6 MPG on high-mileage diesels.

Mobile, on your driveway

The whole job happens where the vehicle is — home, yard or workplace, anywhere in South Wales.

The detail

Everything you need to know about dpf cleaning & diagnostics.

DPFs are misunderstood, and that misunderstanding is expensive. Here is how the system actually works and what goes wrong with it in valley driving.

How a DPF is supposed to clean itself

Soot collects in a ceramic honeycomb. Once the ECU calculates a set soot load, it triggers passive or active regeneration — extra fuel injected late in the cycle raises exhaust temperature to roughly 600°C and burns the soot to ash. That needs sustained load and speed, typically fifteen to twenty minutes above 40 mph. Short school runs from Gurnos to town, or a van doing ten drops a day around Cardiff, never provide it.

Soot load versus ash load — the number that matters

Soot is burnable. Ash is not. A filter with 90% soot and 15% ash is entirely recoverable. A filter with 70% ash is at the end of its serviceable life no matter how many regens you run. We always show you both figures, because that single distinction decides whether you spend nothing or spend hundreds.

The faults that block a DPF in the first place

Sticking or carboned EGR valves dumping excess soot into the exhaust; a leaking or over-fuelling injector; a differential pressure sensor with blocked pipes reporting nonsense; a turbo vane actuator that cannot hold boost during regen; a failing glow plug system on cold-start; low fuel level or a fault preventing the ECU from even attempting regeneration. We test each of these before touching the filter.

Forced regeneration — what it is and its limits

A forced static regen commands the engine to run a full burn cycle while stationary, under monitored exhaust temperatures. It is safe and effective below manufacturer soot thresholds. Above them, forcing a burn risks cracking the substrate or triggering a runaway. When the numbers say no, we tell you no.

Where DPF removal stands legally

Removing or defeating a DPF on a road-going UK vehicle is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle illegal to use on the road. We do not do it. Off-road, motorsport and competition-only vehicles are a separate conversation, and we will document that use case clearly before any work.

Remapping and DPF health

A properly written economy or Stage 1 file can genuinely help a DPF by improving combustion efficiency and reducing raw soot output. A badly written file does the opposite. If we remap after a DPF job, the calibration is written with regeneration behaviour explicitly in mind.
