ECU repair, cloning
and replacement programming
across South Wales.

A dead or faulty ECU is not always a dead ECU. We diagnose the unit properly first — power, earths, comms and internal faults — then repair, clone or programme a replacement so the vehicle drives away as it should.

What this service is

Specialist ecu repair — done properly.

What it is

ECU repair work covers everything from diagnosing a no-communication fault, through recovering a corrupted or bricked unit, to cloning your original data onto a donor ECU and coding it to the vehicle. Where a physical board-level repair is required, we manage that through established specialist partners and handle all the programming ourselves.

Who it's for

Drivers with a non-starting vehicle, a warning-light cluster that makes no sense, a unit damaged by water ingress or a jump-start, a botched remap from elsewhere, or a second-hand replacement ECU that will not talk to the car.

When you need it

Before you spend money on parts. A large proportion of 'failed ECU' diagnoses we are called out to turn out to be wiring, earths, a corroded connector or a failed relay — none of which need a new control unit.

Why professional matters

Because a main-dealer ECU replacement is one of the most expensive jobs on a modern car, and it is frequently avoidable. Even when a replacement is genuinely needed, cloning your original data is usually far cheaper than a dealer-supplied and coded unit.

What it costs to ignore it

The cheap way is the expensive way.

'It needs a new ECU' is the most expensive sentence in motoring — and it is said far more often than it is true.

Real risks

  • Paying four figures for a dealer ECU when the fault was a corroded earth.
  • Buying a second-hand unit from eBay that can never be coded to your vehicle.
  • A bricked ECU after a failed DIY flash on a low battery.
  • Water ingress quietly corroding a unit that could have been saved if caught early.
  • Losing your immobiliser and key data with no backup, turning a repair into a rebuild.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing the ECU before testing power supplies, earths and the CAN network.
  • Assuming any matching part number will simply plug in and work.
  • Attempting a flash on a weak battery with no stabilised supply.
  • Letting a non-specialist attempt immobiliser coding and locking the vehicle out entirely.

Our process

The steps that make the difference.

Every ecu repair job follows the same disciplined sequence — so the result is predictable, repeatable and guaranteed.

  1. 1

    Symptom review and vehicle history

What happened, when, and what has already been tried or replaced. Half the diagnosis is in the story.

  2. 2

    Electrical and comms testing

Battery and charging condition, ECU power feeds, earth integrity, CAN bus communication and connector condition all tested before anyone talks about parts.

  3. 3

    ECU-level diagnosis

Where the unit is genuinely at fault, we identify whether it is recoverable by reprogramming, needs cloning to a donor, or requires board-level repair by our specialist partner.

  4. 4

    Clone, programme and code

Your original data is cloned to the replacement where possible, then the unit is programmed, immobiliser-matched and coded to the vehicle.

  5. 5

    Verify and road test

All modules scanned clean, adaptations reset, live data confirmed and the vehicle road tested before handover.

What you actually get

The outcomes that matter.

You avoid unnecessary parts

Many 'ECU failures' are wiring, earths or connectors. Diagnosis first means you only spend where you need to.

Cloning keeps your data

Immobiliser data, mileage and coding carried across, so no key or component reprogramming drama.

Cheaper than a dealer replacement

A cloned and coded donor unit is routinely a fraction of a main-dealer supplied and programmed ECU.

Recovery from bad flashes

Bricked after a DIY or backstreet remap? Bench and boot-mode recovery is often possible.

Everything handled in one place

Diagnosis, sourcing, programming, coding and road test — you deal with one person throughout.

Mobile where possible

Much of this work happens at your location; only board-level repair requires the unit to travel.

The detail

ECU work is precise, unforgiving and easy to get wrong. Here is what is actually involved.

What actually kills an ECU

Water ingress into scuttle-mounted units, corrosion on connector pins, voltage spikes from jump-starting or a failing alternator, vibration cracking solder joints on older units, and interrupted programming caused by a voltage drop mid-flash. Genuine random internal failure is comparatively rare, which is why diagnosis matters so much.

Cloning versus virginising

Cloning copies your original ECU data — including immobiliser and adaptation data — onto a donor unit, so the vehicle sees the same ECU it always had and no key programming is required. Virginising resets a used unit to a factory-blank state so it can be paired to a new vehicle, which then requires immobiliser and key adaptation. We choose based on whether your original unit is still readable.

Recovering a bricked ECU

A unit interrupted during programming often will not respond over OBD at all. Bench or boot-mode access bypasses the normal communication path and lets us rewrite the bootloader and calibration directly. This recovers a large share of units that have been written off elsewhere.

Immobiliser, keys and component protection

Modern vehicles link the ECU, immobiliser, cluster and keys. Replacing one component without addressing that chain leaves a non-starting vehicle. We handle immobiliser matching and key adaptation as part of the job, and on VAG platforms we deal with component protection where applicable.

When board-level repair is the right answer

Corroded tracks, failed drivers, blown output stages and damaged power supply components can often be repaired at component level. We work with established specialists for that work, manage the logistics, and carry out all the programming and coding once the unit returns.

What we will not do

We will not wind back mileage, we will not defeat immobiliser security on a vehicle whose ownership cannot be evidenced, and we will not remove emissions equipment from a road-going UK vehicle. Proof of ownership is required for any immobiliser or key work.
